Scott Fivelson is a veteran writer and producer and with Near Myth: The Oskar Knight Story, he was honored with the Breakthrough Director Spotlight Award at the Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival.

This mockumentary about the real Hollywood phenomenon about how some great artists are consistently being overlooked by the Academy Awards during Oscar season is garnering buzz as it currently makes the rounds being screened in festivals around the globe.  His film is steeped in Hollywood history and is a film history lesson wrapped inside a touching story.

One thing which I would like my audience to learn from this episode is that if you’re going to be an indie film maker, the biggest disadvantage you will have is that your marketing can’t compete with studios, who can put millions of advertising dollars behind their films, to reach the widest audience possible.

So, the first thing you should do is put a lot of thought and effort into both identifying and reaching out to the audience that you feel your film will resonate with. And it’s best to start that practice as early as you can… even before the film is in production

But like Scott, what will also really help is you, the filmmaker, being the champion of your film. Knowing it inside and out. Talking about it. Finding ways for people to watch your film theatrically – whether in film festivals or public screenings that you set up

Then when someone show an interest in the film, make sure you’re ready to provide them with access to yourself and any promo materials you have so if they want to interview you for a podcast, taped interview, a magazine article or even a blog post, you’ll be ready to go without delay. Because if someone shows an interest in you and your story, if you make them wait while you gather material together, you may miss your window….

because: “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity”

“Near Myth: The Oskar Knight Story” Somewhere between This Is Spinal Tap!, That’s Entertainment!, and Sunset Boulevard, this unique Hollywood biopic is a life-and-times chronicle of one of our greatest directors — Oskar Knight. Lenny Von Dohlen (“Twin Peaks,” “Tender Mercies”) brings the iconic director stirringly to life — a legend of American cinema, forgotten by many, but remembered here by such real-life stars as Oscar winner Margaret O’Brien, International Emmy winner David Suchet, Joaquim de Almeida, Kristina Anapau, Julianna Guill, Rudolf Martin, Randall Batinkoff, Lawrence Pressman, Noel Neill, and many more. He probably never should have made Oskar Knight’s Moby Dick. But he did make They Came in Low. It’s the story of Oskar Knight.
